Event selection criteria for an unbiased composition analysis using data from the 'High Elevation Auger Telescopes' — •Alessio Porcelli — KIT, Karlsruhe, Deutsch

For the estimate of the cosmic ray composition, the energy evolution of the average shower maximum (Xmax) and its variance need to be determined without bias. For this purpose, the Auger Collaboration recently installed the High Elevation Auger Telescopes (HEAT). In this talk we will present the development of event selection criteria to obtain an unbiased Xmax distribution from the data of HEAT. The method used is based on a thorough study of the field of view of the fluorescence telescopes and a selection of the showers within a 'fiducial volume'. Such a volume is needed for a sample of high quality events within a depth range large enough to contain most of the Xmax distribution.
