The Cryogenic Trap for Fast ion beams (CTF) is an electrostatic ion beam trap for the investigation of charged particles in the gas phase located at the MPIK in Heidelberg. It is suited to study thermionic and laser-induced electron emission of anions with complex multi-body structure such as clusters and molecules. In recent measurements the cooling behavior of small copper and cobalt cluster anions was investigated at different ambient temperatures down to 15 K. For probing the internal energy as a function of time after their creation the clusters have been irradiated with a nanosecond laser pulse at 1064 nm, and the delayed electron emission has been recorded. Due to radiative cooling the internal energy changes depending on storage time. By the dependence of the electron emission rate on total energy, these cooling processes become observable in the time-dependent structure of the delayed emission.
