NO formation in a low-pressure air-like plasma has been analyzed using quantum cascade laser absorption spectroscopy (QCLAS) both in the active and the afterglow phase of a pulsed discharge. A new optical technique has been developed in order to measure species densities with a time resolution in the µs-range. The influence of spectral distortions, due to the fast spectral scanning, has been treated by a calibration routine in order to obtain absolute number densities. For a 5 ms pulse at mean currents in the range from 50 to 150 mA, an NO production rate between 1.0×1016 and 1.7×1016 molecules per second has been measured. A self-consistent numerical model consisting of the time-dependent electron Boltzmann equation and a system of rate equations for various heavy particles has been applied to analyze the temporal evolution of the NO concentration during the plasma pulse and in its afterglow. Main reaction kinetics channels for NO production and destruction are presented. Results predicted by the model are discussed in comparison with those measured by QCLAS technique.
