Development of innovative diagnostics for transient plasma processes — •Benjamin Bachmann and Jochen Schein — University of the German Federal Armed Forces Munich, Institute for Plasma Technology and Mathematics, Germany

The experimental characterization of transient thermal plasma processes is a challenge for existing diagnostics due to the increasing degree of automation involving transient processes of complex plasma gas mixtures. To meet this demand we developed three plasma diagnostics allowing for spatially and temporally resolved high-resolution optical emission spectroscopy, acquisition of information of the electric current density distribution in arcs by magnetic field measurements and the temperature estimation of unknown plasma mixtures by probing with evaporating droplets whose thermophysical properties can be measured by intrinsic droplet oscillations.

Instead of utilizing a spectrometer we analyze high speed images recorded with appropriate spectral band filters which are used to determine spatially-resolved spectral intensities of line- and continuum radiation of an Argon plasma. The reconstruction of axially symmetric plasma temperature is performed by Abel inversion and based on the Saha equilibrium. In addition the distribution of the magnetic field components measured by means of Hall sensors placed around the plasma is used to reconstruct the spatial distribution of the electric current density of an arc. Finally the drop oscillation method is utilized to measure themophysical droplet properties in gas metal arcs allowing for estimation of the surrounding plasma temperature.
