A novel technique for performing plasma-chemical reactions is developed. Low energy (12 keV) electrons are sent through thin (300 nm) ceramic membranes into gases at atmospheric pressure. The short range of these electrons in the gas leads to high power densities on the order of 100 W/cm3. Test-experiments in which mass spectrometry is used to study the chemical reactions in a 40 mm long micro-plasma will be presented. Decomposition of CO2 will be used as a first model reaction. The results will be discussed in comparison with so called radiolysis experiments which have been performed for already about 100 years using various high energy projectiles such as electrons, protons, alpha-particles, and fission fragments.
