Momentum transport associated with drift waves — •Tim Teichmann1, Olaf Grulke1, and Thomas Klinger1,21Max-Planck-Institute for Plasma Physics, EURATOM Association, Wendelsteinstr. 1, 17491 Greifswald, Germany — 2Institute for Physics, Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University Greifswald, Felix-Hausdorff-Str. 6, 17489 Greifswald, Germany

Drift waves are among the most common instabilities in magnetized plasmas. Because their only necessary prerequisite is a density gradient, they can develop in the edge region of virtually any magnetized plasma. Due to their intrinsic radial velocity component, drift waves are suggested to play an important role in momentum transport by contributing to the Reynolds stress, thereby driving plasma velocity shear layers due to the associated momentum transport. In this contribution studies of momentum transport -- especially of the radial transport of azimuthal momentum -- with respect to fluctuation-driven shear layer generation are presented. The used data originates from two cylindrical systems: Experimental data of the spatiotemporal evolution of drift waves is taken from the linear plasma experiment VINETA. Numerical data has been generated with the three-dimensional two-fluid code CYTO, which is specifically tailored to meet the experimental situation.
