Ion Dynamics in the Linear Magnetic Reconnection Experiment VINETA II — •Damian Niemczyk1, Olaf Grulke1, Philipp Kempkes1,2, and Thomas Klinger1,21Max-Planck-Institute for Plasma Physics, EURATOM Association, Greifswald — 2Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University Greifswald

Laser induced fluorescence (LIF) provides a non-intrusive diagnostic tool to determine the ion energy distribution function, which provides key parameters such as ion drift, ion temperature, and non-thermal components of the ion species. During magnetic reconnection ion heating and ion acceleration have been observed in space plasmas e.g. solar flares, and lab experiments. The LIF diagnostic is used to systematically study the ion kinetics during driven reconnection in the VINETA II experiment. The LIF scheme used consists of a diode laser with a center wavelength of 668.61nm, a tuning range of 30pm, and CW operation power of 40mW. The LIF system has a temporal resolution on the order of 10−5 s which requires averaging over multiple reconnection events. Spatial resolution is realized by placing the laser collimator and pickup optics on a positioning system. The space-time evolution of the ion energy distribution function discriminated against different phases of the reconnection drive will be presented.
