Simple model for particle charging in drifting collisional plasmas — •Sergey Khrapak — Max-Planck-Institut fuer extraterrestrische Physik

The effect of ion-neutral collisions on particle charging in complex plasmas has received considerable attention over the last decade. A number of experiments and numerical simulations have been performed. Various analytical approximations are also available. Most of these studies however concentrated on isotropic plasma conditions. At the same time, ion flows are often present in realistic situations. It would therefore be desirable to have a model that accounts for both ion-neutral collisions and ion drifts. In this work I address this issue and propose a simple heuristic expression for the ion flux collected by a small sphere in a drifting collisional plasma. The model is checked against available numerical and experimental results. In most cases reasonable agreement is observed.
