Studying the dynamics of magnetized strongly coupled plasmas is a challenging problem for both theory and experiment. We investigate the wave spectrum of the magnetized strongly coupled one-component plasma theoretically using a combination of the quasi-localized charge approximation (QLCA) and molecular dynamics simulations [1]. The principal waves are well described by the QLCA, which, however, is unable to predict the additional high-frequency excitations found in the simulations. We further explore the transition from parallel to perpendicular wave propagation within the QLCA. A strong effective magnetization of the dust particles in a complex plasma is achieved by exploiting the equivalence between the Lorentz force and the Coriolis force (Larmor’s theorem) and setting the dust particles into controlled rotation [2]. In principle, this can be accomplished by angular momentum transfer from a rotating neutral gas column. The Coriolis force replaces the Lorentz force in the rotating frame and allows us to study the normal modes of a highly “magnetized” dust cluster.
