We study the hydration interactions between polar surfaces as a model for lipid membranes using atomistic computer simulations at prescribed water chemical potential and analyze interaction pressures, interaction thermodynamics, and interaction mechanisms.

The overlap of interfacial water layers is analyzed via several distinct water order parameters and compared with predictions of simple continuum theories. We further investigate the electrostatic interaction between charged model membrane surfaces in the presence of counter ions and show that continuum models can successfully describe Coulombic interactions. To this end, we also analyze the dielectric properties of the interfacial water and examine the solvation of salt in water under confinement.
