Matter-antimatter pair plasmas have been of great theoretical and astrophysical interest for a long time. They are predicted to show a fundamentally different behavior from regular plasmas, because of the equal masses of the two species. A Positron-Electron Experiment (APEX) aims for the creation and study of such a plasma in the laboratory. It will be operated at the NEPOMUC (Neutron-Induced Positron Source Munich) facility, which provides a high-intensity positron beam at low energies. To trap both species as a plasma, the dipole magnetic field is favored because of the expected long confinement times. The experimental success relies not only on the parameters of the NEPOMUC positron source. In addition, it is crucial to develop and experimentally verify efficient injection schemes for charged particles across closed magnetic field lines.

In this contribution, recent work from the APEX team is presented, including injection and trapping of electrons in a prototype dipole field created by a permanent magnet, results from the first on-line beam time at the NEPOMUC facility, and design plans for the next generation of confinement device.
