Analytical and Numerical Study of Bose-Einstein Condensate with Localized Impurity — •Javed Akram1 and Axel Pelster21Physics Department, Freie Universität Berlin Germany — 2Physics Department and Research Center OPTIMAS, Technische Universität Kaiserslautern Germany

Motivated by the recent experimental work of Refs. [1, 2], we investigate a localized 133Cs impurity in the center of a trapped 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate. Within a zero-temperature Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field description we provide a one-dimensional physically intuitive model, which we solve by both a time-independent variational approach and numerical calculations. With this we predict at first equilibrium results for the emerging condensate wave function which reveals an impurity-induced dip or bump in case of a repulsive or an attractive Rb-Cs interaction strength. Afterwards, we show that the impurity-induced dip or bump in the condensate wave function remains even present during a time-of-flight (TOF) expansion after having switched off the harmonic confinement. All these results are useful for extracting the Rb-Cs interaction strength from experimental TOF expansion data.
