SAFIR: First results towards a high-rate capable PET insertChiara Casella1, Günther Dissertori1, •Jannis Fischer1, Alexander Howard1, Astrik Jeitler2, Werner Lustermann1, and Bruno Weber31ETH Zürich, Institut für Teilchenphysik, Schweiz — 2Hochschule Technik, Wirtschaft und Gestaltung, Konstanz, Deutschland — 3Universität Zürich, Institut für Pharmakologie und Toxikologie, Schweiz

The SAFIR (Small Animal Fast Insert for mRi) project aims at the development of a novel PET insert for quantitative dynamic imaging with unprecedented temporal resolution thus allowing to visualize changes in tracer concentration within seconds. To make up for the statistics loss due to the short acquisition time, the system has to be able to handle source strengths of up to 500 MBq. This combined with the true simultaneity with MRI imaging will make the SAFIR insert a unique development in the vast domain of PET/MRI instrumentation.

One major challenge is the choice of front-end electronics, which has to be capable of measuring and processing incoming signals at an expected random rate of the order of 104 Hz per square millimeter detector surface. We will present results from a test with the TOFPET ASIC equipped with LYSO crystal matrices attached to Hamamatsu 4x4-SiPM arrays and exposed to up to 500 MBq of 18F-2-FDG.
