Electroweak Gauge Boson Scattering with the ATLAS Detector — •Ulrike Schnoor — Universität Freiburg

This talk presents the first measurement of a process involving electroweak gauge boson scattering, carried out with the ATLAS detector in the first run of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The scattering of electroweak gauge bosons is closely connected to the electroweak gauge symmetry and its spontaneous breaking through the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism. Since it contains triple and quartic gauge boson vertices, a measurement of this process probes the self-interactions of electroweak gauge bosons. The contribution of the Higgs boson to the weak boson scattering amplitude ensures unitarity of the scattering matrix. Therefore, the scattering of massive electroweak gauge bosons is sensitive to deviations from the Standard Model prescription both of the gauge bosons’ self-interaction and of their interaction with the Higgs boson.

At the LHC the scattering of electroweak gauge bosons is accessible via the purely electroweak production of two gauge bosons in association with two jets. The most promising scattering channel of two like-charge W bosons has been investigated based on proton-proton collision data collected at √s=8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment. First evidence for electroweak production of W±W±jj has been established at the 3.6σ level. The measured production cross-section agrees with the Standard Model expectation. Limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are derived in the framework of an effective field theory.
