Design and Evaluation of the Learning Environment in Particle Physics to promote students' critical thinkingFarahnaz Sadidi and •Gesche Pospiech — Technische Universität Dresden, Fakultät Mathematik und Naturwissenschaften, Fachrichtung Physik,Professur für Didaktik der Physik,01062 Dresden

On the one side, it is a long-standing concern of educators and teachers to establish a method in order to teach students to think critically in everyday life and in different subject domains e.g. physics. On the other side it has been discussed that well-designed subject matter instruction can provide students with the opportunity to learn relevant and transferable critical thinking skills (McPeck 1990). To this end, we found that "The First Principles of Instruction" model offers explicit guidelines to designing learning environments that can promote the active and constructive acquisition of higher order learning outcomes (Merrill 2002,2012). In this poster we will present the design of subject matter instruction in particle physics implementing "The First Principles of Instruction" model for domain-specific and domain-general critical thinking skills and research instruments, which will be developed in order to evaluate the teaching sequence according to the Design- Based Research methodology.
