Competence-Based, Research-Related Lab Courses for Materials Modeling: The Case of Organic Photovoltaics — •Sebastian Schellhammer1,2,3 and Gianaurelio Cuniberti1,2,31Institute for Materials Science and Max Bergmann Center of Biomaterials, TU Dresden — 2Dresden Center for Computational Materials Science, TU Dresden — 3Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden, TU Dresden

Molecules are essential building blocks of our daily life, thus being target in many scientific disciplines. This allows for the design of a multidisciplinary lab course that focuses on the optimization of molecular materials for solar cell applications based on computational methods. The didactic concept is innovative in two ways: (i) The methods used throughout the individual tasks are designed for reduced computational effort allowing generation of experimentally relevant quantities at desktop machines. (ii) The research-related and competence-based modularized structure allows the students to advance according to their personal interests and talents, but also requires them to cooperate in multidisciplinary groups. The lab course prepares students for their future work in academia and industry and effectively captures their intrinsic interest in this research field. Although being designed for Master students, we further discuss application for Bachelor and Highschool students.
