Stanene was recently predicted and has subsequently triggered intense research on Sn-based graphene-like 2D materials. Combining LEED, STM, spin- and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) and DFT calculation, we present clear evidence for the formation of a stanene-like superstructure on the surface of Au(111). Our ARPES results show the existence of Dirac-cone-like bands around the Γ point with an electron velocity of 1×106 m/s, which originates from the admixture of Sn p and Au d states. Spin-resolved ARPES measurements reveal a topological insulator-like spin texture. Our realization of a Stanene-like superstructure lays the foundation for the easy fabrication and investigation of stanene as a potential next generation 2D material.
