Heating in Periodically Driven Optical Lattices — •Christoph Sträter and André Eckardt — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik komplexer Systeme, Nöthnitzer Str. 38, 01187 Dresden, Germany

In recent years, the possibility of periodically driving optical lattices has gained a lot of attention since it opens fascinating new ways of engineering single- and many-body quantum models with ultra-cold atoms. Examples include the creation of artificial gauge fields, topological insulators, as well as exotic quantum phases and particle species, like lattice anyons. However, these experiments are challenged by the amount of heating which is introduced to the system by the time-periodic driving and which is not yet fully understood. We investigate single- and many-body heating processes in driven optical lattices using analytical and numerical methods that we compare to experimental results [1-3]. We explain relevant heating channels and show up parameter regimes where lattice driving is feasible.
