Optimization studies for the event selection in the H → τlep τlep decay channel at s13 TeV with the ATLAS detector — •Benjamin Rottler, Markus Schumacher, and Duc Bao Ta — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Freiburg

The analysis of the decay of the Higgs boson to τ leptons allows the determination of the τ lepton Yukawa coupling as well as the coupling strength and structure of the Higgs boson to weak gauge bosons and gluons.

With the data collected in Run-1 of the LHC the ATLAS and CMS experiments individually observed evidence for the Higgs to tau decay. Due to the larger integrated luminosity in Run-2 and the enhanced cross section at √s=13 TeV an observation of the H → τ τ decay is expected using only the data collected by the ATLAS experiment. This enables more precise measurements of the Higgs to tau coupling and Higgs boson properties.

The selection for Run-2 can be optimized to the new run conditions and reconstruction tools with the help of multivariate analysis (MVA) techniques by maximizing the expected significance. In this talk the optimization of the event selection in the H → τlep τlep channel will be discussed for the full 2015 and 2016 Run-2 datasets corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 fb−1 at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13 TeV.
