The precise measurement of the Standard Model parameters, such as the top quark mass mt, is an important part of the LHC physics programme. It allows for consistency checks of the Standard Model and can also be used to place constraints on new physics models. The most accurate single measurement of the top quark mass was conducted by the CMS collaboration using the Run I data coming from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Therefore the same methodology is used here to analyse the LHC 2016 Run II data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. We present early results of the top quark mass determination in the semi-leptonic decay channel. New Monte Carlo (MC) generators are used to simulate tt events. A comparison between the real data and simulation will be presented, as well as the main steps towards the mt extraction.
