The quantum mechanical propagator of a massive particle in a linear gravitational potential is well-known to contain a phase ϕg scaling with the third power of propagation time T. This phase has the remarkable feature of being proportional to the ratio mg2/mi, where mg and mi denote the gravitational and the inertial mass of the particle, respectively.

We propose an experiment to observe this phase using an atom interferometer [1]. For this purpose, we prepare two different accelerations gg and ge for the ground and excited state of the atom. In this way the atom accumulates two different phases ϕg(g,e) depending on its internal state and the total interferometer phase scales as T3.
