Gyrokinetic studies of ASDEX Upgrade I-mode pedestal scenario using GENE code — •Karl Stimmel, Alejandro Bañón Navarro, Tim Happel, Frank Jenko, and the ASDEX Upgrade Team — Max Planck Institute for Plasmaphysics, Boltzmannstraße 2, 85748 Garching bei München

The Improved confinement mode (I-mode) offers energy transport like H-mode and particle confinement properties like Lmode. Unlike H-mode, the I-mode is free from Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) and has been accessed in several different Tokamaks by utilizing unfavorable magnetic configuration during a discharge. The ASDEX Upgrade I-mode is characterized by the Weakly Coherent Mode (WCM), a quasi-coherent fluctuation observable in the plasma edge.

Experimental Low confinement mode (L-mode) and Improved confinement mode (I-mode) data from ASDEX Upgrade shot 30865 was used as input for two gyrokinetic scenarios using the GENE code. L-mode and I-mode pedestal scenarios at ρtoroidal = 0.98 were compared linearly and nonlinearly. Different linear instabilities were found at the same radial position when considering I-mode and L-mode parameters; linear growth rates, frequencies, ballooning structures and electrostatic/electromagnetic heat flux ratios were compared. Future implications and early results of nonlinear simulations are also presented.
