Information dynamics in chaotic electron systems — •Markus Klug1 and Sergey Syzranov21Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Karlsruhe, Deutschland — 2University of California, Santa Cruz, USA

Chaotic systems are by definition exponentially sensitive to initial conditions. The chaotic dynamics of quantum systems are characterized by Lyapunov exponents λL, the rates of growth of the so-called out-of-time order correlators, quantities of the form ⟨[P(t),P(0)]2⟩ ∝exp(λL t), where P is an observable, e.g. the total momentum of the electrons in a quantum dot. In this work, we compute λL for electrons in the presence of neutral excitations, such as plasmons or phonons, in a weakly disordered metal. We demonstrate that the rate of exponential growth matches the rate of change of information associated with the uncertainty in the system’s total momentum. Our work establishes for the first time explicit connection between quantum chaos characteristics and the rate of change of information stored in a system’s observable and thus presents a way to measure λL in experiments.
