Uniaxial stress is a powerful method to explore the electronic states of materials. By lifting the symmetry of a lattice, it enables direct probing of symmetry-related phenomena. Reducing the size of the sample and improving surface quality are expected to improve the achievable precision and the maximum achievable stress before the sample fractures. Here, I will present methods and apparatus for applying uniaxial stress to samples that have been microstructured with a focused ion beam, and demonstrate with measurements on PrV2Al20.
