Education-related design principles for a virtual laboratory — •Sascha Grusche, Onur Oenes, and Christina Schindler — Department of Applied Sciences and Mechatronics, Lothstraße 34, 80335 Munich, Germany

A virtual laboratory is a learning platform where students can practice lab processes remotely. With VLabS (Virtual laboratory for semiconductor technology), we address a diverse audience to foster STEM-related interests and skills in line with industry needs. The educational design of VLabS is based on three principles: The principle of sequence aims at guiding students from everyday experience to laboratory experiments. The principle of modularity enables flexible combination of rooms and equipment. The principle of tendency leverages the habit of reading from left to right. For each principle, we show examples from VLabS, including a gallery opposite each lab room.
