Neutron production with energetic (1 to 4 GeV) light particles. — •D. Hilscher1, J. Galin2, F. Goldenbaum1, U. Jahnke1, B. Lott2, L. Pienkowski1, and B. Quednau21Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin — 2GANIL-Caen

Accelerator neutron sources for neutron scattering, transmutation or energy amplifiers exploit the excitation of heavy target nuclei by energetic (GeV) light particles in primary or secondary spallation reactions in a thick target and the decay of the excited nuclei by evaporation of many neutrons. These processes are usually modelled with intra and inter nuclear cascade codes, which still miss an experimental verification for energies in excess of 1 GeV. In order to do so, we have investigated at LEAR and the secondary beam facility at the PS in Cern reactions with 2 to 5 GeV/c protons, antiprotons, pions, kaons, and deuterons on thin (few mm) and thick (40 cm) targets of Lead and depleted Uranium. We show neutron production cross sections and multiplicity distributions measured with the Berlin 4π neutron scintillator tank and discuss future experiments at Cosy.
