Neutron induced fission of 238U — •F.-J. Hambsch1, F. Vivès1, S. Oberstedt2, and G. Barreau31JRC-IRMM, Retieseweg, B-2440 Geel, Belgium — 2ILL, F-38042 Grenoble, France — 3CENBG, F-2440 Bordeaux, France

At IRMM, the reaction 238U(n,f) has been studied. Mass-, kinetic energy- and angular distributions for both fission fragments have been measured at several incident neutron energies with a double ionization chamber with more than 105 events. The pre-neutron fragment properties have been calculated taking into account the average number of neutrons released as a function of mass ν (A) deduced from the known ones of 233U and 235U. Above the barrier, the TKE shows a smooth behaviour with an apparent drop at the highest value of En, similar to the one observed in the reaction 237Np(n,f). In the region of the threshold, the behaviour of TKE  has been compared with the results of Goverdovsky et al. (1). In parallel theoretical calculations have been performed (2) in the frame of the multi-modal random neck-rupture model of Brosa et al. (3) and compared to the experimental results.
