We investigate the dynamics of mesons in dense nuclear matter produced in heavy ion reactions in the SIS energy range. In particular we study the influence of medium corrections to the pion and kaon dispersion relation which modify the real part of the meson optical potential. The heavy ion reactions are described within the QMD/RQMD transport model. The imaginary part of the optical potential is thereby taken into account by scattering and reabsorption processes. In the inelastic channels we included Δ and N*(1440) resonances. In general we observe a strong influence of medium effects on the meson dynamics. Concerning the pion a strongly attractive potential which comes close to the pion condensation limit can be ruled out by the comparison to experimental data. For the creation of K+ mesons, both, primary (BB⊢→ BYK+) and secondary (π B⊢→ YK+) processes are taken into account. The in-medium kaons are described in a quasi-particle picture including scalar and vector mean fields. Their propagation is consistently performed according to a covariant Vlasov type transport equation. Transverse flow and spectra of pions and kaons are compared to results obtained by the FOPI collaboration.
