Coulomb Dissociation (CD) of the unstable nucleus 8B is of particular interest with respect to the “solar neutrino problem”. This is related to the fact that CD of 8B provides an alternative approach to obtain the S-factor for the 7Be(p,γ)-reaction at low energies. In experiments at RIKEN the CD of 8B has been studied at about 50 A MeV [1]. At GSI we have undertaken a similar study at 257 A MeV using the fragment separator FRS to produce the 8B beam and the KaoS spectrometer to observe both breakup products (p and 7Be) in coincidence. Goals were to go down to lower relative energies than in the RIKEN experiment and also to measure the M1 component in addition to the dominant E1 multipolarity. Preliminary experimental results will be presented.
