New Time-to-Digital Conversion Method Based on a Correlation — •R. S"udholt1, A. Georgiev1, Th. Rose1, W. Gast2, and E.v/d Meer21FH M"unster, FB Physikalische Technik — 2KFA-IKP J"ulich

A new Time-to-Digital Conversion (TDC) method which allows an integration in the digital signal processing of semiconductor detectors is proposed. The method uses the well known Vernier interpolation digital technique as a starting point. The important novelty, which makes this technique applicable in nuclear spectroscopy, is the utilization of correlation analysis to define the coincidence points [1]. The method provides high resolution, high dynamic range and low Differential Non-Linearity at relatively low clock frequencies, comparable with the signal processing frequency. The implementation of the correlation in hardware (PLD) and the technical realization of the new Correlation-Interpolation Method (CIM) is discussed.
