Effect of coil ripple on α-particle trajectories in the Helias reactor — •Alexander V. Zolotukhin — Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik , Garching b. München

The interaction of thermonuclear α-particles with the first wall of the plasma device is of great interest for the fusion reactor. In particular, we have done a study for the Helias reactor (HSR) which is described in detail in Ref.1. To get a map of the intersection points of lost α-particle orbits with the vacuum chamber in HSR, the particles were launched from several cross sections of magnetic surfaces which are characterized by an average minor radius of r/a ≤ 0.4 where a is the minor plasma radius. The coil ripple is determined by the number of coils per field period; this number has been varied in order to see the effect of the coil ripple. Results about the guiding center motion of collisionless α- particles in the vacuum magnetic field and the angular distribution of footprints on the first wall as a function of the coil ripple will be presented (see also Ref.2).
