Contribution of reflected and passing particles to the MHD mode energy in a guiding center stability analysis of a stellarator plasma — •Axel Könies — Max- Planck- Institut für Plasmaphysik, Teilinstitut Greifswald, Koitenhäger Landstr., D-17491 Greifswald

In a 3D plasma confinement device reflected particles may become restricted to the period of the magnetic field. The latter have been shown to be destabilizing if they are energetic [1]. Thus, a stability analysis from the kinetic point of view is necessary.

The guiding center description of a plasma yields an energy principle similar to MHD which can also be generalized treating an energetic particle component with the energy functional differing only in its kinetic term from the MHD result [2]. In the case of thermal plasmas, the contribution of this term which is stabilizing is investigated for a stellarator plasma in an optimized field configuration (Wendelstein 7-X) [3]. Both, the contributions of the various classes of reflected particles and of the passing particles are considered.
