We describe experiments on the noise properties of a high-finesse Fabry-Perot interferometer consisting of a rigid incoupling mirror and a low-mass moving mirror. The moving mirror is a monocrystalline silicon oscillator with a very high mechanical Q factor at the resonance frequency of 26 kHz. The Q factor was determined by piezoelectric excitation followed by a measurement of the decay time. We observed Q factors as high as 4.3 million for a torsional mode at cryogenic temperatures. The mirror vibration is read out by a monolithic Nd:YAG laser frequency stabilized to the fundamental mode of the cavity using a Pound-Drever locking scheme. First measurements of the noise properties of the combined mechanical/optical system are discussed.
