On the technical specifications of an advanced-technology laser aided air quality measuring DAS system — •D. Zevgolis1, T. Doukas1, T. Efthimiopoulos2, P.-M. Gogou1, H. Kambezidis3, D. Karaboulas1, J. Katsenos1, and S. Kotsopoulos11University of Patras — 2University of Creta — 3NOA, Greece

A new project on the measurement of air pollution is going to start soon in Greece; it consists of two phases: (1) the study of a mobile LIDAR sytem in the Athens area with the purpose of monitoring air pollution, (2) the implementation of the proposed system. The present work belongs into the first phase and is focussed on the technical specifications of the laser set-up. Attention has been paid to the laser system configuration, pulse energy and suitable wavelengths for detecting SO2, NO2, Cl2, NO, Toluene, Benzene and Hydrocarbons. Measurements from a similar LIDAR system performed in the Athens area in the summer of 1994 will be presented. The advantage of using a LIDAR system is to have a 3-d mapping of the air pollutant which helps to understand the chemistry involved. – The project is funded by the Ministry of Environment and by the EU through the Second Community Support Framework.
