The CERN-CEC High Energy Neutron Reference Field Facility — •Thomas Otto, Manfred Höfert, Marco Silari, and Graham Stevenson — CERN, CH-1211 Geneva 23, Switzerland

CERN’s Radiation Protection group runs since 1993 a reference field facility for high energy neutrons. Positive hadron (protons and pions) and negative pion beams with momenta between p=120 GeV/c and 205 GeV/c hit a massive copper target. The secondary particles are filtered by a shielding of either 80 cm of concrete or 40 cm of iron. Behind the iron shielding, a neutron spectrum with a maximum at about E = 1 MeV and an additional high energy component is recorded. Behind the concrete shielding, the neutron spectrum has a pronounced maximum at about E = 100 MeV and resembles the high energy component of the radiation field created by cosmic rays at commercial flight altitudes.

A wide variety of investigations with active and passive neutron dosimeters has already been performed in these two calibration fields. Here we present measurements of the radiation fields with a TEPC spectrometer. They agree well with Monte Carlo calculations with the FLUKA program. Finally some examples of detector responses in these fields are discussed.
