Lattice calculations on Yang-Mills theory give strong evidence that in certain (Abelian) gauges, the relevant infrared degrees of freedom are given by the Abelian gauge field components only. In particular, the condensation of magnetic monopoles, appearing as gauge fixing artefacts, offers an interesting explanation of confinement by the dual Meissner effect. Since the remaining non-Abelian field components are however essential for the asymptotic freedom in the UV, one may ask for a theoretical understanding of the “Abelian dominance” in the IR.

For this purpose, we consider SU(2) YM-theory in the so-called maximal Abelian gauge, where the above scenario is verified on the lattice [1]. Making use of path integral techniques, we are able to integrate out the charged gluon field at the expense of a new Abelian tensor field. The eom (gap-equation) for the latter has a trivial solution which corresponds to the standard perturbation theory at one loop order. Furthermore, non-trivial solutions to the gap-equation can be understood in terms of a dynamically generated mass for the charged gluon field components, so that these fields decouple from the theory in the IR.
