Magnetic Dichroism in soft X-ray photoemission from thin iron films and islands on W(110) — •L. Lu, J. Bansmann, and K.H. Meiwes-Broer — Fachbereich Physik, Universit"at Rostock, Universit"atsplatz 3, D-18051 Rostock

We report on angle resolved photoemission with tunable linearly and circularly polarized synchrotron radiation from thin iron films and islands on W(110). Epitaxial iron films have been prepared at room temperature. Subsequent flashing the Fe films up to 1000K gives rise to a phase transition from thin films to islands [1]. We investigated both the thin Fe films and the islands with LEED and magnetic circular as well as linear dichroism in the angular distribution of photoelectrons (MCDAD/MLDAD) at the storage ring BESSY. Different easy magnetization directions for thin films and islands have been observed. The Fe 3p fine structure can be obtained by a peak-fitting procedure of the mj -sublevels. Our magnetic dichroism results show a strong dependence on the photon energy. Additionally, a comparison between experimental MLDAD results and a calculation [2] shows nice agreement.
