Circular Dichroism and Spin Information in Soft X-ray Emission — •J. Lüning, S. Eisebitt, J.-E. Rubensson, D. Schmitz, S. Blügel, and W. Eberhardt — Institut für Festkörperforschung, Forschungszentrum Jülich, 52425 Jülich

In soft x-ray emission spectroscopy the electronic structure of the valence band (VB) is studied. This is done by analyzing the energy of the photons emitted when an excited core hole state decays by the transition of a VB electron to the empty core level. The spectral intensity distribution is determined by the density of states projected to the atomic site and the angular momentum symmetry of the core state. For Fe it was predicted that using circular polarized photons to excite Fe L3 core hole states one should observe magnetic circular dichroism mapping the spin-resolved density of states.

We demonstrate that indeed the spin-resolved LPDOS is measured under this condition. However, in contrast to the predictions the spin resolution is achieved primarily by the selective excitation. Circular magnetic dichroism in the X-ray emission process is also shown to have an influence on the final state spin contribution to the spectra. The importance of taking reflection, self-absorption of the incoming and outgoing radiation and the Auger decay channels into consideration in the data analysis is emphasized.
