Electron and spin dynamics at transition metal surfaces probed by nonlinear magneto-optics. — •R. Knorren, W. Hübner, and K. H. Bennemann — Institut für theoretische Physik, Freie Universität Berlin, Arnimallee 14, 14195 Berlin

Time-resolved pump–probe experiments have become an important experimental tool to study electron dynamics in metals after laser excitation. Recently, experiments with fs time resolution have been performed on transition metals, in which in addition to the electronic excitations, the magnetic properties are affected by the laser irradiation [1].

Here, we address the nonlinear magneto-optical response, which has been used succesfully in the investigation of magnetism at transition metal surfaces. The nonlinear magneto-optical susceptibility is calculated starting from a band structure obtained in the combined interpolation scheme. This allows us to study the dependence of the nonlinear magneto-optical response on electron temperature [2] and magnetization. Experimental findings for a nickel surface are interpreted in terms of the evolution of the electronic and magnetic properties of the material.
