We report on the first study of Magnetic Circular Dichroism (MCD) in 3d-4f resonant photoemission (PE). It is found that the MCD signal of the resonant PE spectra changes strongly when the photon energy is varied across the MIV,V edge of rare earth materials. The observation of substantial MCD signals makes resonant 3d-4f PE, where the PE cross section is enhanced up to 50 times over the direct PE channel, an attractive tool for element specific analysis of thin multicomponent magnetic systems and for domain imaging by PE microscopy. - At certain energies, the resonant PE spectra show additional spectral features due to ‘"spin-flip"’ transitions, which reveal detailed information about the correlation energies in the PE final state. Furthermore the high resolution MCD-XA spectra show a wealth of new spectral features which stimulate a reanalysis of the MIV,V edge by atomic multiplet theory.
