Bifurcation Analysis of a Voltage-Driven Electro-Conductive Fluid — •N. Seehafer1 and E. Zienicke21Institut für Theoretische Physik und Astrophysik, Universität Potsdam, PF 601553, D-14415 Potsdam, Germany — 2Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur, BP 4229, F-06304 Nice Cedex 04, France

A numerical bifurcation analysis shows that in a plane layer of an incompressible, electrically conducting fluid to which an electric field parallel to the boundary planes is externally applied, the quiescent basic state remains stable, no matter how strong the applied electric field and irrespective of the values of other system parameters [1]. If the fluid occupies a cylindrical shell (or a full cylinder), however, bifurcations to magnetohydrodynamically active states are observed. This situation is reminiscent of the difference between plane and rotating hydrodynamic Couette flow.
