Molecular dynamics close to lubricated surfaces — •Martin Arndt, Ralf Stannarius, and Friedrich Kremer — Universität Leipzig, Linnestr. 5, D-04103 Leipzig

The molecular dynamics of low molecular weight glassforming liquids (salol, propylene glycol, glycerol) confined to nanoporous glasses (pore sizes 7.5, 5.0, and 2.5 nm) with a hydrophobic coating of the inner surfaces is studied by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy (10 mHz - 1.8 GHz). The coating of the pores results in a faster dynamics of the molecules compared to the bulk liquids. Significant differences between the "quasi" van-der-Waals liquid salol and the H-bonding liquids propylene glycol and glycerol are observed. The results are discussed in the light of theories for the dynamic glass transition that consider cooperative phenomena.
