Excitation induced frequency shifts of single molecules — •Hermann Bach1, Elizabeth A. Donley2, Andre M"uller2, Alois Renn2, and Urs P. Wild21Physical Chemistry Laboratory, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology , ETH - Zentrum, CH-8092 Zurich/Switzerland — 2ibid.

Single molecule spectroscopy of fluorescing chromophores in solid matrices at low temperatures has been developed into a powerful technique for exploring solid state dynamics [1]. The dynamical properties of the host-dopant system give rise to line broadening and resonance frequency jumps of the single molecule optical absorption lines. In order to gain a better understanding of the intermolecular interactions between the probe molecules and the host matrix causing this behavior, it is attempted to observe the resonance frequency response of probe molecules to well defined local perturbations in the environment, e.g. electronic excitations of perturber molecules. Two approaches are being followed to realize this concept and we present results obtained with both: a.) Experiments with probe and perturber molecules in crystalline matrices. b.) Experiments with covalentely linked probe and perturber molecules.
