MULTI-PHOTON FLUORESCENCE SPECTROSCOPY OF SATURATED HYDROCARBONS — •Andreas Volkmer and David J.S. Birch — Department of Physics and Applied Physics, University of Strathclyde, John Anderson Building, 107 Rottenrow, Glasgow G4 0NG, UK

We have observed multi-photon induced fluorescence spectra and lifetimes from commonly used saturated hydrocarbons such as cyclohexane and methylcyclohexane using near infrared femtosecond laser excitation and single-photon timing detection. Previous work [1] has successfully used frequency-doubled two-photon dye laser excitation at 298 nm and phase/modulation detection to record fluorescence from such solvents as an easier alternative to vacuum ultra-violet techniques [2,3]. Our results demonstrate a new approach in studying the photophysics of saturated hydrocarbons.
