Relativistic Laser-Plasma-Interaction by Multi-Dimensional Particle-in-Cell Simulation — •A. Pukhov and J. Meyer-ter-Vehn — Max-Planck-Institut f"ur Quantenoptik, D-85748 Garching

Nonlinear propagation of relativisticly intense subpicosecond laser pulses in underdense, nearly critical, and overdense plasmas is studied by means of 2D and 3D particle-in-cell simulations. The emphasis is made on new effects in the strongly relativistic regime (I>1018 W/cm2). We consider relativistic self-channeling, generation of 100 MG magnetic fields and acceleration of background electrons to multi-MeV energies.
