Guiding Center Studies for Highly Energetic Charged Particles in Wendelstein 7-X — •A.V. Zolotukhin, C.D. Beidler, F. Herrnegger, J. Kißlinger, and H. Wobig — Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik, Boltzmannstr.2, D-85748 Garching b. München

The drift losses and interaction of highly energetic particles with the first wall of plasma confinement devices are of great interest because of the heat load danger to the device and diagnostic elements. The guiding center motion of collisionless highly energetic protons and deuterons is studied for Wendelstein 7-X (W 7-X, described in detail in [1]). The studies are done in two cases.
1.The energy of the launched particles is chosen to simulate particle behavior due to neutral beam heating.
2.The launched particles have a normalized Larmor radius of a ρ/a ≈ 1/30, where a is the minor radius of the last closed magnetic surface. This condition is chosen to simulate α-particle behavior in the fusion reactor. To obtain a map of the intersections points with the vacuum chamber and divertor plates in W 7-X, the particles were launched from several magnetic-surface cross sections with radii r/a ≤ 0.5. Results of guiding center trajectories and mapping of the footprints on the vacuum chamber will be presented.
