The ampholytic diblock copolymer poly(methacrylicacid- b-dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate) P(MAA-b-DMAEMA) is an interesting model system for the study of adsorption of polyelectrolytes from dilute solution in water on silica. The dependences of the adsorbance as a function of pH, salt concentration and polyelectrolyte concentration in the solution have been investigated by ellipsometry and can be understood on the basis of the adsorption of the two blocks depending on acidity. The formation of different structures on the surface of dried films has been observed by atomic force microscopy and shows very different lateral organisation depending on adsorption conditions and adsorbed amount.
