High quality images of soft organic molecular assemblies by using SFM with an active feedback controller — •L.F. Chi1, B. Anczykowski1, S. Jacobi1, S. Rakers1, J. Cleveland2, and H. Deformation of soft organic molecular assemblies such as monolayers, gels and micelles is often observed during the inspection of the samples with scanning force microscopy (SFM), even if the contact time between the tip and the sample is effectively reduced by using tapping mode. This effect strongly influences the correct understanding of the image and restricts the resolution. By using a home-made active feedback circuit, the SFM can be operated in the pure attractive regime in air. We demonstrate here that some organic assemblies are extremely sensitive to the vertical force applied by the SFM tip. Fur such samples, reliable SFM imaging can only be carried out by using the feedback improved SFM.
