Ion Cooler Rings: Advanced Tools in Modern Research — •P. Kienle — TU München

Following introductory remarks on the development of ion beam cooling techniques, including recent observations of ordering effects in cooled high Z-ion beams, some experimental highlights gained with storage rings will be reviewed. These include the study of meson production at threshold, the observation of boundstate-β-decay including a calibration of the Re-Os-cosmo-chronometer and a new determination of the age of the galaxis, the development of Schottky noise mass spectroscopy for precise mass measurements of nuclei far off stability, and some progress in atomic spectroscopy of highly ionized atoms. We conclude with future opportunities of ongoing research in extending electron cooling techniques in the multi GeV regime.
