Status of the GDH–experiment at MAMI — •A. Thomas1 and GDH–and A2 21Institut für Kernphysik, Universität Mainz, Becherweg 45, 55099 Mainz — 2

The Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule connects the helicity dependent photoabsorption cross section with the anomalous magnetic moment of the nucleon. The GDH-collaboration measures total and partial cross sections of circularly polarized photons on longitudinally polarized nucleons in the energy range 140 – 800 MeV at MAMI and up to 2.3 GeV at ELSA.
The 4 π- detector used at MAMI has been calibrated in 1997 using unpolarized liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets. The experiment on the proton using a butanol frozen spin target built in Bonn has been started at MAMI. A status report on the experiment will be given.
